Approaching the final intermediate time bonus sprint, a rider from UAE Team Emirates lost control on a wet bend and slid out, triggering a huge pileup involving more than 30 riders – the most serious incident of the 2026 Giro so far.
- Abandons: Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance; his teammate Marc Soler also withdrew due to injury.

At 28, Silva is the first Uruguayan rider to start the Giro d’Italia.
