On August 20, the 2026 Renewi Tour continued with Stage 2, taking the riders from the Belgian coastal town of Blankenberge to Ardooie over a distance of 173.9 kilometers. The stage was largely flat, with limited elevation gain, and was expected to favor the sprinters. However, strong crosswinds and a high-speed race made the day much more complicated than a typical flat stage.
The wind became an important factor as the race progressed. Teams fought for position at the front of the peloton, while the strong crosswinds repeatedly threatened to split the field. Although the peloton briefly fractured at several points, the main group was eventually brought back together, setting up another battle for the finish.
Breakaway Caught as the Peloton Pushes the Pace
After the start in Blankenberge, Niklas Behrens, Mikkel Bjerg and Michiel Lambrecht formed the day's early breakaway. The trio managed to build only a limited advantage, with their maximum lead reaching around one and a half minutes.
As the race entered the second half, the strong winds made it increasingly difficult for the breakaway to maintain its advantage. The three riders were eventually caught approximately 84 kilometers from the finish. The crosswinds also caused the peloton to split temporarily, although the groups quickly came back together.
With the breakaway neutralized, several riders attempted to attack from the peloton, but none of the moves was able to establish a decisive advantage.
A Major Crash Changes the Race
The most significant incident of the stage came during the second half of the race, when a large crash brought down a number of riders.
Among those caught in the incident was Jonathan Milan, who had won Stage 1 and started the day in the overall leader's jersey. Milan was able to remount and continue racing, but he lost significant time and was no longer able to defend his position at the front of the general classification. Dylan Groenewegen was also involved in the crash.
The incident had a major impact on the overall race situation. With Milan losing contact with the leading group, the battle for the race lead was suddenly wide open.
Philipsen Dominates the Final Sprint
Despite the difficult conditions and several attacks in the closing stages, the peloton remained together for the final 25 kilometers. With numerous teams still having strong sprinters in their lineups, there was little interest in allowing another breakaway to succeed.
The final kilometers became increasingly chaotic as the sprint teams fought for position. Tim Merlier encountered a problem when he slipped off his pedal during his sprint launch, while Olav Kooij was unable to move into the ideal position for the final acceleration.
Jasper Philipsen remained composed in the hectic finale. The Alpecin-Premier Tech rider launched his sprint at exactly the right moment and produced a powerful acceleration to take a clear victory in Ardooie.
Philipsen crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 11 minutes and 27 seconds, securing his second-stage victory of the 2026 Renewi Tour. It was also his seventh victory of the season.
Giddings Takes Second, Wærenskjold Finishes Third
Joshua Giddings of Lotto Intermarché delivered an impressive sprint to finish second. The young rider stayed well positioned during the hectic final kilometers and successfully secured a place on the podium.
Søren Wærenskjold of Uno-X Mobility finished third after producing a strong final sprint. The Norwegian rider also benefited from his ability to remain near the front of the peloton during the chaotic finale.
All three riders finished with the same recorded time.

Philipsen Takes the Overall Lead
Philipsen's stage victory also moved him into the overall lead of the 2026 Renewi Tour.
The Belgian took advantage of the time bonus from his stage victory to move ahead of Olav Kooij and Dries De Bondt. Philipsen now leads the general classification by four seconds, while Kooij and De Bondt are tied on time behind him.
Jonathan Milan, who began the day as the race leader, dropped out of contention for the overall lead after losing more than six minutes following the crash. His situation became one of the major storylines of the second stage.
Stage 3 Ahead
The Renewi Tour will continue on August 21 with Stage 3 from Celles to Geraardsbergen. The route will be more demanding than the opening two stages, with several climbs and a finish better suited to classics specialists and riders competing for the general classification.
After Philipsen's victory and his move into the leader's jersey, the race is entering a more decisive phase. The upcoming hills will provide the first major test of whether Philipsen can defend his lead against the riders targeting the overall classification.
With the time gaps still extremely small, the battle for the Renewi Tour title remains wide open.
