The 17th stage of the 2026 Tour de France concluded on July 22 (Beijing Time). Covering a total distance of 174.7 kilometres, the stage ran from Chambéry to Voiron. Though predominantly a flat stage, it featured several rolling sections that created opportunities for breakaway riders. Nevertheless, relentless pursuit by sprint teams brought the race back to a bunch sprint finish.
After coming agonisingly close to victory on multiple preceding stages, Alpecin–Premier Tech seized its moment of glory. Supported by an impeccable final lead-out from teammate Mathieu van der Poel, Jasper Philipsen unleashed a powerful surge in the final metres to claim his first stage win of this year’s Tour de France, as well as the 11th Tour stage victory of his career.
This triumph marked the perfect redemption for Philipsen following a string of near-misses in prior sprint stages. He had finished inside the top five five times without stepping onto the top step of the podium. This win rewarded the team’s collective efforts and put an end to Alpecin–Premier Tech’s barren spell without a stage victory at this edition of the Tour.

In the final few hundred metres, van der Poel delivered a precise, high-speed lead-out to position Philipsen perfectly for the sprint. Facing off against fellow fast finishers including Josh Tarling, Olav Kooij and Mauro Schmid, Philipsen demonstrated blistering power in the dash to cross the line half a wheel ahead of the rest and secure the stage win.
Multiple Teams Launch Breakaways; Pedersen Chases Sprint Points
From the start, numerous riders launched attacks in attempts to form a leading breakaway group. Mads Pedersen, holder of the green jersey, joined the front group around 65 kilometres from the finish in a bid to extend his lead in the sprint points classification.
However, consistent pace control from Alpecin–Premier Tech, Visma and other sprint squads prevented the breakaway from building a substantial advantage. The leading group was caught by the peloton in the closing kilometres, forcing a bunch sprint finish.
Several crashes unfolded during the stage, involving riders such as Tom Pidcock and Lenny Martinez. Fortunately, both remounted and completed the stage without sustaining setbacks to their general classification bids.
General Classification Unchanged; Pogačar Retains Yellow Jersey
As this was a pure sprint stage, all general classification contenders finished safely within the main peloton, with no significant time gaps opening up between the GC riders.
Tadej Pogačar stayed in possession of the yellow jersey, holding a 4 minutes and 32 seconds advantage over Remco Evenepoel to retain top spot in the overall standings. With the race now heading into the decisive Alpine mountain stages, the battle for the Tour crown is set to intensify. Philipsen’s stage victory drastically narrowed the gap in the green jersey points standings. He now trails classification leader Mads Pedersen by just seven points, reigniting a tight contest for the points classification title. That said, the upcoming mountain stages offer limited opportunities to collect sprint points, leaving Pedersen firmly in the driving seat.
Stage 18 Preview: Consecutive High-Mountain Battles Underway
After the flat sprint stage, the 2026 Tour de France returns to the high Alps for Stage 18, which features a series of gruelling climbs and stands as one of the pivotal stages that will shape the final general classification. For Pogačar, steady, composed riding will suffice to defend his lead. Meanwhile, Evenepoel and other GC rivals must capitalise on the final mountain opportunities to launch attacks — otherwise, the yellow jersey may well remain unchanged all the way to Paris.
