Wout van Aert conquers the “Hell of the North”

One week after securing a strong fourth-place finish at the Tour of Flanders, Wout van Aert delivered a career-defining performance to win the 2026 edition of Paris-Roubaix. Over a brutal 258.3-kilometer route filled with legendary cobbled sectors, the Belgian star finally claimed victory in the “Hell of the North,” outsprinting world champion Tadej Pogačar after an extraordinary and chaotic race.  
A Chaotic Race of Attrition  
As anticipated, the race unfolded in a relentless and unpredictable fashion. Mechanical issues, crashes, and constant attacks shaped the day, leading to many favorites being eliminated or delayed long before the finale.  
Despite suffering two bike changes, Tadej Pogačar demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, fighting his way back into contention to rejoin the leading group. Meanwhile, Van Aert maintained a consistent position at the front, carefully managing his effort across the punishing cobbles.  
Decisive Move and Velodrome Showdown 
 In the closing phase, Van Aert launched a powerful attack that only Pogačar was able to follow. The two riders entered the iconic Roubaix Velodrome together, setting the stage for a head-to-head sprint for victory. 
Despite acknowledging the odds were against him, Pogačar attempted to challenge. However, Van Aert’s superior sprint preparation proved decisive. The Belgian executed his plan flawlessly, powering past the Slovenian to take a long-awaited and emotional victory.

After a second-place finish in 2022 and a strong fourth-place showing in 2023, Van Aert finally secured his first Paris-Roubaix triumph. Visibly emotional at the finish, he dedicated the victory to former teammate Michael Goolaerts, who tragically passed away following a crash in a previous edition of the race.
