Giro Returns Home, Southern Italian Hills Ignite the Race
On May 12, 2026, the 2026 Giro d’Italia concluded Stage 4. After three opening stages in Bulgaria, riders finally contested the first race on Italian soil: a 138kilometer hilly stage from Catanzaro to Cosenza.

Movistar Team quickly lifted the pace as the climb began, instantly stretching the peloton into a long line. Many pure sprinters dropped back one after another. As the speed rose, GC contenders and punchy classic riders moved to the front, marking the first real GC battle of this Grand Tour. Overnight pink jersey wearer Guillermo Thomas Silva faced serious trouble here, failing to hold the main group and seeing his time gap balloon.
Narváez Surges Late to Seal Crucial Victory
In the final sprint for Cosenza, Orluis Aular of Movistar Team launched an early attack, attempting to seize the stage win with a long sprint. But Jhonatan Narváez, the Ecuadorian rider from UAE Team Emirates XRG, showed superior finishing speed. Narváez timed his surge perfectly to overtake in the final meters and claim Stage 4.
It was his third career Giro d’Italia stage victory and a landmark comeback win following early-season injury struggles. After the stage, Narváez said winning the first Italian stage of the Giro held great meaning for him and his team.
Ciccone Takes Pink Jersey, Italian Fans Celebrate
Almost as notable as the stage win was the change in the pink jersey.
Giulio Ciccone of Lidl–Trek moved into the overall lead with consistent riding plus bonus seconds earned at intermediate sprints and the finish line, officially taking the Maglia Rosa as the general classification leader.
As Ciccone became the first Italian rider to wear the pink jersey in this year’s race, the home crowd erupted in celebration. For Italian fans who have waited years to see a home rider challenge for longterm GC control, the pink jersey has lifted the race’s excitement to new heights.
The General Classification Battle Begins in Earnest
Although Stage 4 was not a traditional high-mountain stage, it already revealed the brutality of the GC battle.
Now back in Italy, stage difficulty and race intensity are rising sharply. Continuous hills, technical descents, and frequent pace changes are steadily draining riders’ energy reserves.
The upcoming Stage 5 — a 203-kilometer hilly leg from Praia a Mare to Potenza — is expected to be another major battleground for aggressive riders and GC contenders alike. For the top GC favorites, the real Giro d’Italia has only just begun.
