In professional road racing, the outcome of a race is never determined solely at the finish line. More often, the decisive moments unfold in the final kilometers—where speeds peak, space tightens, and decision-making becomes critical. Stage 1 of the 2026 Tour of Hainan was exactly such a race.

Before the start, the scenario seemed clear: a flat stage, high temperatures, and an expected mass sprint finish. Teams followed their usual routines— positioning, forming lead-out trains, and preparing for the sprint. The race unfolded according to the “standard script.”

But professional racing rarely follows the script. 

Chaos erupted in the critical final kilometers. Speeds reached their limits, the peloton compressed, and the fight for position intensified dramatically. In such conditions, even the smallest mistake is magnified. 

Ultimately, multiple crashes shattered the race's rhythm. Sprint trains were disrupted, formations collapsed instantly, and numerous riders went down. For teams including MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort, the priority in that moment was no longer just about results—it was about staying upright, navigating safely, and avoiding being caught in the chaos.
