This marked the first genuine flat sprint stage of the race, a long-awaited opportunity for top sprinters. After nearly four hours of high-speed racing, Olav Kooij of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale (Decathlon CMA CGM) claimed victory in the mass bunch sprint at the finish line. He secured the first Tour de France stage win of his career and delivered his squad’s maiden victory of this edition.
First Flat Stage Sees Peloton Control Race Pace
Following consecutive hilly and climbing tests across the previous stages, Stage 5 delivered a route tailored for sprinters. Though the course skirted the foothills of the Pyrenees, total elevation gain was minimal, with only one Category 4 climb — the Côte de Baleix — insufficient to shift the race dynamic.
As racing got underway, one rider launched a long solo breakaway, hoping to replicate the successful breakaway wins seen in prior stages. However, with the stage clearly favouring sprinters for the first time this Tour, the main peloton refused to grant the escapees much leeway.
Teams featuring elite sprint leaders, including Soudal Quick-Step, Alpecin-Deceuninck, Visma | Lease a Bike and Decathlon CMA CGM, maintained steady control of the race, keeping the breakaway’s advantage within a recoverable margin. Inside the final 20 kilometres, multiple sprint trains assembled, kicking off the lead-up to the high-speed finish sprint.
Chaotic Final Sprint Sees Kooij Seize the Perfect Moment
Once the race entered central Pau, speeds surged above 65 kilometres per hour.
Narrowing roads and aggressive position jostling in the final kilometres triggered a crash within the bunch, disrupting several riders and briefly splitting the main group.
Nonetheless, all general classification contenders finished safely without losing any time gaps.
The decisive action unfolded in the final 200 metres.
Decathlon delivered a flawless lead-out train for Kooij. The Dutch star launched his sprint at the optimal moment, holding his front position through the blistering dash to cross the line first.

Torstein Træen of Uno-X Mobility crossed the line safely within the main peloton to retain the yellow jersey for the overall leader. Sean Quinn held second place, with a 28-second gap separating the pair. Title favourites Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard also finished without incident, deferring the real battle for the general classification to the upcoming mountain stages.
Sprint Showdown Concludes; Mountain Battles Loom Ahead
Stage 5 fulfilled pre-race expectations of a full mass sprint, delivering the first outright win for a sprinter at this year’s Tour.
Yet this calm will not last long. Stage 6, running from Pau to Gavarnie-Gèdre, will plunge the peloton deep into the Pyrenees. Stretching 186.2 kilometres, the stage features multiple high-category climbs plus a summit finish, widely regarded as the first true mountain showdown for the general classification in this Tour.
It will host the first head-to-head duel between the overall contenders and pose a genuine test for the holder of the yellow jersey. Favourites Pogačar and Vingegaard are expected to launch full attacks and defensive battles in the mountains.
