The fourth stage of the 2026 Tour de France concluded on local time July 7. Starting in Carcassonne and finishing in Foix, the 181.9-kilometer route was a classic hilly stage. As the route hit successive climbs, the large breakaway began to splinter.

This marked his first stage victory of the 2026 Tour, his third career Tour de France stage triumph, and his 12th stage win across all three Grand Tours.

Though Pogačar surrendered the yellow jersey, he remains dead level with his main GC rival Jonas Vingegaard. The high-mountain stages that will ultimately decide the overall title are still yet to come.
Extreme Heat Acts as an Additional Opponent
Beyond the undulating terrain, the stage’s biggest hurdle was extreme heat approaching 40°C. Teams deployed every cooling tactic available: frequent feed zone stops, ice socks and blocks of ice to mitigate energy drain caused by the sweltering conditions. Race organizers also boosted supply at feed stations to reduce heat-related health risks.
Even so, hours of riding under blazing sun left numerous riders suffering from severe dehydration and depleted energy reserves in the stage’s final kilometers.
