On the first categorised climb, several riders launched attacks, including Einer Rubio, Afonso Eulálio and Stage 2 winner Guillermo Thomas Silva. They were soon joined by Victor Campenaerts, Gianmarco Garofoli and others, forming a breakaway of over ten riders that built a lead of nearly two minutes.
Team Trek, led by pink jersey wearer Giulio Ciccone, controlled the peloton to protect their leader’s overall advantage, with domestiques taking turns on the front to close the gap. At 14km to go on a wet descent, Arrieta crashed at high speed, allowing Eulálio to open a 30-second gap. But just seven kilometres later, Eulálio also crashed on the slippery tarmac; he remounted quickly, only to be caught by a recovering Arrieta, setting up a head-to-head sprint once more.
In a final twist, with just 2 kilometres remaining, Arrieta took a wrong turn on a downhill section, losing valuable time before slipping again while chasing back, dropping 10 seconds behind Eulálio. Victory looked lost – but Arrieta summoned a stunning late surge. He powered up the final gentle uphill, closing the gap at breakneck speed to overhaul a fatigued Eulálio and take the win in 5:12:37. Guillermo Thomas Silva finished third in 5:12:40, with Eulálio second in 5:12:39.

Stage 5 reshaped the overall classification, delivering both a memorable stage winner and a new pink jersey holder.
