New UCI rules for 2026 bring tighter equipment restrictions—here's what's changed.
Handlebar & Cockpit Dimensions:
Minimum Handlebar Width: Handlebars must now have a minimum overall width of 400mm, preventing a small number of riders from using ultra-narrow bars.
Minimum Hood Width: The distance between the innermost points of the brake lever hoods must be greater than 280mm.
Drop Bar Flare: The maximum allowable flare (outward sweep) on the drops of road handlebars is now 65mm. For track handlebars, the limit is 80mm.
These two rules are designed to limit excessively narrow hand positions and overly flared cockpit setups.
Beyond the cockpit, the frame and wheels face new limits as well.
Bike Frame & Wheels:
Maximum Rim Depth: The maximum permitted rim depth for wheels is now 65mm. This rule applies to all wheels, including those with wave-shaped or other deep-section aerodynamic profiles, where the maximum rim depth must not exceed 65mm. Time trial and triathlon bikes are exempt from this specific rule.
Fork & Rear Triangle Width: The maximum allowable width for the fork (measured at the crown/brake mount area) is 115mm. The maximum width for the rear triangle (measured at the chainstay/seatstay area) is 145mm.
Anti-Doping Update:
In a separate but significant update, effective January 1, 2026, carbon monoxide (CO) has been added to the WADA Prohibited List as a performance-enhancing method.
