2026 Vuelta a España Stage 19: Dunbar Wins on Peñas Blancas as Mas Retains Red Jersey

Dunbar Wins a Dramatic Final Climb
The battle to establish the breakaway began immediately after the start in Vélez-Málaga. It took almost three hours of intense racing before the main breakaway was finally established, underlining the difficulty and importance of the stage.
The route featured two second-category climbs, Puerto de las Abejas and Puerto del Viento, before the riders reached the decisive ascent of Peñas Blancas. The final climb measured approximately 18.8 kilometers at an average gradient of 6.5 percent, with several much steeper sections.
As the race entered the final climb, the breakaway riders began to attack one another. Santiago Buitrago made a decisive move with around 13 kilometers remaining, and only a small group could follow, including Dunbar, his teammate Thomas Gloag, and Urko Berrade of Kern Pharma.
Buitrago attacked again inside the final two kilometers and quickly created a gap. Dunbar initially remained behind, but the Irishman launched his counterattack in the closing kilometer.
With just around 350 meters remaining, Dunbar finally caught Buitrago and immediately moved past him. Buitrago was unable to respond, allowing Dunbar to cross the finish line alone and secure a memorable stage victory.

A Strong Day for Pinarello-Q36.5
The result was particularly impressive for Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, which placed two riders on the podium.
Dunbar took the stage victory, while his British teammate Thomas Gloag finished third, 23 seconds behind the winner. Buitrago finished second, 14 seconds behind Dunbar.

Dunbar's victory was also an important personal achievement. After suffering serious injuries in a training crash earlier in the year, the Irish rider has gradually returned to his best form. His latest victory marked his first win in two years, following his two stage victories at the 2024 Vuelta.
Mas Successfully Defends the Red Jersey
While the breakaway riders battled for the stage victory, the general classification contenders remained focused on the red jersey.
Richard Carapaz was one of the first major GC contenders to make an aggressive move, attacking with more than 100 kilometers still remaining. However, his rivals quickly controlled the move and prevented him from gaining significant time.
On the final climb to Peñas Blancas, the pace increased again. EF Education-EasyPost pushed the group before Primož Roglič launched an attack inside the final two kilometers.
However, Mas responded successfully and stayed with Roglič and the other leading contenders. The Slovenian was unable to create a decisive gap, meaning there was no major change at the top of the general classification.
Mas crossed the finish line safely with the other main GC contenders, maintaining his 1:37 lead over Roglič.

General Classification Remains Unchanged
Following Stage 19, Enric Mas remains in the overall lead with just two stages remaining in the 2026 Vuelta a España.
Roglič continues to sit second at 1:37, while Felix Gall remains third at 3:01. Richard Carapaz is fourth at 5:17, with Oscar Onley fifth at 6:03.

One Final Mountain Test Awaits
With Stage 19 completed, the 2026 Vuelta a España has entered its final decisive weekend.
Stage 20 will provide the last major mountain test before the final stage in Granada. The riders will face another demanding route, with the overall classification still potentially vulnerable to attacks from Roglič and the other leading contenders.
For Mas, the 1:37 advantage provides a strong position, but the battle is not over. Roglič remains close enough to attack, while the fight for the remaining podium positions could also change during the final mountain stage.
Mas has already shown impressive consistency throughout the final week. After a strong performance in the Stage 18 individual time trial, where he limited his losses to Roglič, he successfully defended his advantage again on the mountains of Málaga.
The pressure will now be on the Movistar leader to maintain his composure through the final mountain challenge.
