September 1, 2026, Spain — The 2026 Vuelta a España resumed racing on Tuesday with Stage 10, the first stage after the race's opening rest day. The 184.7-kilometer route from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra featured rolling terrain and nearly 3,000 meters of elevation gain, creating a demanding day that ultimately came down to a chaotic sprint finish.
French rider Bastien Tronchon of Groupama-FDJ United produced a stunning late surge to take the stage victory, securing the biggest win of his career and his first-ever Grand Tour stage victory. Magnus Cort finished second, while Thibau Nys took third. Wout van Aert crossed the line in fourth.
Meanwhile, Enric Mas of Movistar Team safely finished with the main group and retained the overall leader's red jersey.
A Tough 184.7-Kilometer Stage After the Rest Day
Stage 10 marked the beginning of the second week of the 2026 Vuelta. Starting in Alcaraz, the riders faced 184.7 kilometers of constantly rolling terrain before reaching the finish in Elche de la Sierra.
The route included three categorized climbs: Puerto del Peralejo, Puerto de Aýna and Puerto de Socovos. With a total elevation gain of approximately 2,991 meters, the stage was considerably more demanding than a conventional sprint stage.
The challenging terrain made the outcome difficult to predict. The stage could potentially favor a long-range breakaway, a strong puncheur or a fast rider capable of surviving the climbs.
Seven Riders Form the Breakaway
The attacks began immediately after the start, with several riders attempting to establish a breakaway.
A seven-man group eventually went clear after around 22 kilometers. The escapees were Enzo Paleni, Michael Gogl, Fredrik Dversnes, Jasha Sütterlin, Fabian Weiss, Sinuhé Fernández and Iván Cobo.
The breakaway built a maximum advantage of just under three minutes, but the sprinter teams were unwilling to let the escape gain too much ground.
Cofidis and Visma-Lease a Bike took responsibility for controlling the gap, particularly with fast finishers such as Bryan Coquard, Matthew Brennan and Wout van Aert looking for opportunities later in the stage.
Enzo Paleni took the first categorized climb at Puerto del Peralejo, while Fabian Weiss was first over Puerto de Aýna and also took the intermediate sprint in Hellín.
As the race entered its final third, the gap steadily fell. The last major obstacle was Puerto de Socovos, the third-category climb summited with approximately 21 kilometers remaining.
Attacks Continue on the Final Climb
The final climb completely changed the dynamics of the race.
Several riders from the peloton launched attacks as the gap to the breakaway fell to around one minute. Eddie Dunbar, Kevin Vermaerke, Richard Carapaz and Mattias Skjelmose all became involved in the aggressive racing.
Enric Mas responded well to the attacks and remained attentive near the front of the group, protecting his red jersey.
After the summit, the remaining breakaway riders continued to fight for survival. Fredrik Dversnes became the final rider to resist at the front, but the peloton continued to close in.
With the breakaway finally caught inside the final four kilometers, the race entered an extremely fast and unpredictable finale.
Tronchon Produces a Sensational Late Surge
The final kilometer delivered the biggest drama of the day.
Yevgeniy Fedorov of XDS Astana attacked under the one-kilometer banner, with Xabier Mikel Azparren of Pinarello Q36.5 following his move.
The two riders managed to create a small gap and appeared to have a chance of avoiding a bunch sprint. However, the peloton was closing rapidly.
With only around 50 meters remaining, Bastien Tronchon launched an explosive acceleration.
The French rider surged past Fedorov and Azparren and reached the finish line first in a thrilling sprint. The official Vuelta report described it as a spectacular and unexpected victory.
For the 24-year-old Tronchon, the victory represented the biggest achievement of his professional career and his first Grand Tour stage win.
He had previously won a stage of the Vuelta a Burgos in 2022 and the Tro-Bro Léon classic, but his success in Elche de la Sierra marked a major breakthrough on the biggest stage of his career.
Tronchon Beats Cort and Nys in the Sprint

Tronchon's victory came ahead of two highly experienced fast finishers, Magnus Cort and Thibau Nys. Van Aert finished fourth after being unable to produce the final acceleration needed to challenge for the win.
The result also highlighted the unpredictable nature of this year's Vuelta, with several established favorites unable to control the chaotic finale.
Enric Mas Keeps the Red Jersey
While the stage victory went to Tronchon, the overall classification remained unchanged at the top.
Enric Mas safely finished inside the main peloton and retained the red leader's jersey.
The Movistar Team leader entered Stage 10 with a 1:18 advantage over Primož Roglič, while Felix Gall remained third at 1:39.
Mas had to remain particularly attentive during the difficult final kilometers, as several overall contenders became involved in attacks on the final climb.
After the stage, Mas described the day as extremely hard and fast, explaining that he wanted to stay near the front of the race and avoid unnecessary risks.
The Overall Classification Remains Open
Although Mas continues to lead the Vuelta, the overall battle remains far from decided.
Primož Roglič remains only 1:18 behind the red jersey, while Felix Gall is 1:39 back. Oscar Onley and Richard Carapaz are also within striking distance as the race moves deeper into the second week.
With several major mountain stages still to come, the current gaps are small enough for the overall standings to change dramatically.
The upcoming climbs at Calar Alto and La Pandera, among other key stages, are expected to play a major role in determining the final general classification.
The Fight for the Jerseys Continues
The red jersey remains firmly on the shoulders of Enric Mas, who continues to lead the general classification after Stage 10.
Wout van Aert remains one of the leading contenders in the points classification and continues to fight for the green jersey.
In the young rider classification, Oscar Onley remains an important figure in the battle for the white jersey.
Meanwhile, Santiago Buitrago continues to lead the mountain classification and holds the climber's polka-dot jersey.
With the race entering its second week, the competition for all four major classifications is becoming increasingly intense.
The Vuelta Moves Into a Crucial Second Week
Stage 10 demonstrated once again that the 2026 Vuelta a España is difficult to predict.
The rolling route, nearly 3,000 meters of elevation gain and aggressive racing created a stage in which the outcome remained uncertain until the final meters.
For Tronchon, the day became a career-defining moment. After surviving a demanding route and a chaotic finale, the Frenchman timed his acceleration perfectly and claimed his first Grand Tour victory.

The route will take the riders from Cartagena to Murcia over approximately 153.8 kilometers, with considerably less elevation gain than Stage 10. The flatter profile is expected to provide another opportunity for the fast finishers.
After the demanding battle through the hills around Albacete, sprinters and their teams will have another opportunity to fight for victory.
Riders such as Matthew Brennan, Wout van Aert, Jordi Meeus and Bryan Coquard could be among the key names to watch in the next sprint battle.
