The 2026 Tour de Romandie has concluded its opening hilly circuit race in Martigny, Switzerland. Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG delivered a masterclass attacking performance to take the race victory, while seizing the overall leader’s yellow jersey from Dorian Godon, officially launching the GC battle of this year’s event.
Decisive Climb: Pogačar’s Commanding Performance
The opening hilly circuit race started and finished in Martigny, covering 171.2 kilometers. The first-category Ovronnaz climb (8.9 km, 9.7%) before the finish proved to be the decisive battleground.
An early breakaway group built a lead of nearly 3 minutes, but the pace intensified sharply as the peloton reached the climbs. Midway up the steep slopes, Pogačar launched a devastating acceleration, instantly distancing the main field. Only German rising star Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) and French prodigy Lenny Martínez (Bahrain Victorious) were able to hold his wheel, forming a decisive leading trio.
On the flat, headwind run-in to the finish, the three riders worked together to hold off the chasers. Pogačar then dominated the final sprint to seal the win in a time of 4 hours 00 minutes 27 seconds. Lipowitz and Martínez finished second and third, 7 seconds and 16 seconds behind respectively.
GC Shake-Up: Young Stars Emerge

Thanks to his climbing points, Lenny Martínez claimed both the white jersey for best young rider and the polka-dot jersey for mountains classification, emerging as one of the most impressive young talents of the race. Pre-race GC favorite Primož Roglič failed to follow the decisive move, losing crucial time on the first day and facing an uphill battle for overall victory.

Await Pogačar’s dominant return has intensified the suspense for the Tour de Romandie title. With the top three separated by just 20 seconds on GC, the strong form of Lipowitz and Martínez promises even fiercer competition in the upcoming high-mountain stages.
