The 2026 Renewi Tour officially got underway on August 19, with the opening stage starting and finishing in Diest, Belgium. Covering approximately 188.3 kilometers, Stage 1 delivered a fast and highly competitive race, with heavy rain and a chaotic finale adding extra difficulty to the opening day.
In the end, Lidl-Trek's Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan claimed victory after a thrilling photo finish. Milan narrowly edged out Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij, while Tim Merlier finished third and Jasper Philipsen took fourth.
The victory gave Milan an ideal start to the five-day Renewi Tour and put him at the top of the general classification after Stage 1.
A Fast and Challenging Opening Stage in Diest
The opening stage featured a loop around the Diest area and the surrounding Hageland region. Although the route was considered suitable for the sprinters, the terrain and weather conditions made the race considerably more demanding than a typical flat opening stage.
Five riders managed to establish the day's main breakaway, with Timo Kielich, Quinten Hermans, Dries De Bondt, Lionel Taminiaux and Carl-Frederik Bévort among those attempting to stay clear of the peloton for much of the race.
The breakaway worked well together and maintained a significant advantage for much of the stage. With time bonuses available during the race, the escapees also had an opportunity to influence the early general classification.
Behind them, however, the major sprint teams gradually increased the pace, keeping the gap under control and preparing for a potential bunch sprint.
Heavy Rain Creates a Nervous Race
Rain became one of the defining factors of the opening stage. Wet roads made the fast course more difficult to navigate, particularly through corners and during the final kilometres.
The difficult conditions also contributed to several crashes, increasing the tension inside the peloton. With the leading group still holding an advantage deep into the race, the outcome remained uncertain for much of the afternoon.
The breakaway riders continued to fight for the victory, but the peloton gradually closed the gap as the finish approached.
Breakaway Caught Inside the Final Kilometres
The five-man breakaway managed to survive until the closing stages and briefly appeared capable of fighting for the stage victory.
However, the chasing peloton accelerated dramatically in the final kilometres. The gap eventually disappeared inside the final two kilometres, bringing the race back together just before the decisive sprint.
With the escapees finally caught, the world's leading sprinters were given one final opportunity to battle for the first stage victory of the 2026 Renewi Tour.
Milan Wins by the Narrowest of Margins
The final sprint was extremely close. Milan launched his effort at the crucial moment and managed to hold off Kooij's late charge.
The two riders crossed the finish line almost simultaneously, requiring a photo finish to determine the winner. The official result eventually confirmed Jonathan Milan as the winner, with Olav Kooij taking second place.
Tim Merlier completed the podium in third, while Jasper Philipsen finished fourth. Sam Bennett rounded out the top five.
For Milan, the victory was particularly significant given the strength of the sprint field. The 2026 Renewi Tour features several of the world's leading sprinters, making the opening-stage victory an important early statement.

The 2026 Renewi Tour runs from August 19 through August 23, with five stages across Belgium and the wider Benelux region. The race brings together an exceptional combination of world-class sprinters and riders capable of competing for the overall title.
After the opening sprint showdown, Stage 2 on August 20 will take the riders from Blankenberge to Ardooie over 173.9 kilometers. The largely flat route is expected to provide another major opportunity for the sprinters, with Milan, Kooij, Merlier and Philipsen once again among the riders to watch.
The overall classification is expected to become more significant in the following stages, particularly Stage 3 from Aalter to Geraardsbergen, which features the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg. The later stages will provide further opportunities for riders targeting the general classification.
For now, Jonathan Milan has made the perfect start. After surviving a rain-soaked and chaotic opening stage, he emerged victorious in one of the closest sprint finishes of the season and claimed the first leader's advantage of the 2026 Renewi Tour.
