May 26, 2026 – The Giro d’Italia resumed its decisive final week after the second rest day with Stage 16, a 113-kilometer run from Bellinzona, Switzerland, to the summit finish at Carì. Though one of the shortest road stages of this year’s race, relentless mountain climbs and a brutal final first-category ascent ensured high intensity from the start.

Visma | Lease a Bike’s Jonas Vingegaard delivered another dominant display, attacking solo on the final climb to claim his fourth stage victory of the 2026 Giro and further extend his overall lead.
Visma Controls the Race; Vingegaard Strikes with 7km to Go
Several riders attempted breakaways in the opening half, but Visma kept the peloton firmly under control, reeling in the gaps. As the race reached the long, grueling ascent to Carì, the main group shrank rapidly, with general classification (GC) contenders moving into attack mode early.

With less than 7 kilometers remaining, Vingegaard launched a decisive acceleration. None of his GC rivals could respond to the Dane’s blistering pace. Felix Gall briefly tried to close the gap, but Vingegaard pulled away effortlessly.
Stage Result: Vingegaard Solos to Victory
Vingegaard crossed the line alone atop Carì, cementing his status as the race’s strongest climber. Decathlon AG2R’s Felix Gall took second place, with Jai Hindley rounding out the podium in third.

Overall Lead Swells to Over Four Minutes
With today’s emphatic win, Vingegaard’s overall lead ballooned to more than four minutes, tightening his grip on the pink jersey (Maglia Rosa).
Previously a consistent top GC contender, Afonso Eulálio suffered a significant time loss on the climb, dropping to fifth in the overall standings. Felix Gall moved up to second overall, clarifying the battle for the podium.

For Visma, the victory not only solidifies Vingegaard’s pink jersey advantage but also puts the team firmly in control of the 2026 Giro.
Final Week Mountain Battles Begin
At just 113 kilometers, Stage 16 was short but brutal. The relentless climbing and high altitude pushed many riders to their limits, marking the start of an elimination-style phase of the race.

With five stages remaining, the Giro heads into key mountain battles, including consecutive high-mountain finishes in the Dolomites. While Vingegaard holds a commanding lead, the fight for the podium, mountains classification and young rider standings remains fierce.

Next Stage Preview
Stage 17 will run 202 kilometers from Cassano d’Adda to Andalo, setting the stage for another tactical showdown between breakaway specialists and the GC peloton.
